20 Feb Pond Hockey Classic
Lake Winnipesaukee is not just a seasonal spot for summer fun. During the winter season, the Lakes Region is a great destination for sports like ice fishing, skating and of course ice hockey. The 11th annual New England Pond Hockey Classic was held at Meredith Bay on Lake Winnipesaukee January 31st – February 2nd. The 26 ice rinks hosted over 275 hockey teams, equating to over 2,200 hockey players, throughout the weekend, many of which flew in just for the tournament. With over 500 games played, the teams were giving their all to earn the coveted trophy.
Spectators from across New England (and beyond!) flocked to what some consider Lake Winnipehockey and were able to enjoy a mix of intense hockey action and cold Labatt Blue, the best-selling Canadian beer. The Pond Hockey Classic offers spectators and players alike a competition experience unlike any other. The event was free to attend and included a Bank of NH Pavilion Stage with live music playing from multiple bands throughout the weekend for all to enjoy. The Common Man Restaurant held concessions and there was a Labatt Blue zone selling cold beer and delicious cocktails as well.
The Summit Resort is only a 17-minute drive from all the pond hockey action and provided a nice home base for players and spectators. Players found our spacious suites large enough to fit their teams of four (plus two more people) and all their hockey equipment as well as their luggage. After a long day on the ice, our over-sized Roman Spa hot tub and sauna were the perfect spot to relax sore muscles and game plan for the following day’s tournament play.
