Pond Hockey Classic

Lake Winnipesaukee is not just a seasonal spot for summer fun. During the winter season, the Lakes Region is a great destination for sports like ice fishing, skating and of course ice hockey. The 11th annual New England Pond Hockey Classic was held at Meredith Bay on Lake Winnipesaukee January 31st – February 2nd. The 26 ice rinks hosted over 275 hockey teams, equating to over 2,200 hockey players, throughout the weekend, many of which flew in just for the tournament. With over 500 games played, the teams were giving their all to earn the coveted trophy.

Spectators from across New England (and beyond!) flocked to what some consider Lake Winnipehockey and were able to enjoy a mix of intense hockey action and cold Labatt Blue, the best-selling Canadian beer. The Pond Hockey Classic offers spectators and players alike a competition experience unlike any other. The event was free to attend and included a Bank of NH Pavilion Stage with live music playing from multiple bands throughout the weekend for all to enjoy. The Common Man Restaurant held concessions and there was a Labatt Blue zone selling cold beer and delicious cocktails as well.

The Summit Resort is only a 17-minute drive from all the pond hockey action and provided a nice home base for players and spectators. Players found our spacious suites large enough to fit their teams of four (plus two more people) and all their hockey equipment as well as their luggage. After a long day on the ice, our over-sized Roman Spa hot tub and sauna were the perfect spot to relax sore muscles and game plan for the following day’s tournament play.

Recent Resort Renovations

One of our primary goals at the Summit Resort is to consistently improve the guest experience. In doing so we have taken on a few renovation projects that will be sure to enhance your next Lakes Region vacation. Measuring in at 25,000 square feet, our amenities center is one of the major attractions at the Summit. Earlier this season we installed a new air handler in our large amenities building to both improve circulation and better regulate the air. Our indoor, heated pool area includes a glass enclosure allowing the sunlight to come in and provide some natural heat. The newly installed system offers significant improvements in ventilation, heat and air conditioning to regulate the space. To assist our new air handler with heating and provide additional humidification, we also installed two new energy efficient boilers. The new boiler system allows us to reduce fossil fuel consumption and relax while enjoying the warm, tropical feel of our highly adored amenities building.

Another renovation that is currently in progress is updating our electric dry heat sauna. Since beginning the project, we have installed a brand-new heating unit and control panel to regulate the heat and allow you to truly “sweat it out”. Within the next month we plan to modernize the entirety of the sauna, including reconstructing the walls and floor with Ansley Amber ceramic tile and updating the seating area to form a custom cedar bench.

Outside, guests can enjoy a smooth, seamless ride to get to their suites after checking into the resort. Before the winter hit and the ground was frozen, we were able to pave the parking lot of our Summit Resort Building Two. Now there is level asphalt, free of any bumps or potholes. Additionally, we were able to backfill the walkways with fresh loam to provide the final touches to our paving project.

As part of the comprehensive renovation project and resort wide updates, we will be installing a brand-new roof on our amenities center this coming spring. There has been minimal downtime throughout these renovations and resort updates and we would like to thank all the hardworking staff for completing the projects thoroughly and in a timely manner.

Lakes Region Scenic Fall Foliage Drive

The Summit Resort is centrally located in the New Hampshire Lakes Region offering close proximity to Weir’s Beach, and some of the best fall foliage viewing in the state. It’s the perfect time of the year to enjoy a scenic drive around Lake Winnipesaukee. Take note of the beautiful fall colors, don’t forget to get out and stretch your legs along the way for some great food and tax free shopping. For more information on the towns you will be driving through check out the blog from our sister resort on Lake Towns here.

Start your day off taking Rt. 3 From Weirs Beach, all the way into Meredith Town Center. Grab some delicious breakfast at Sunshine and Paws and take a walk-through downtown for some awesome shopping and lakeside views before hopping back into your car.

From Meredith town center, continue on to Rt. 25 until you hit Center Harbor. Don’t blink, because this small town packs a lot of New Hampshire punch. This section of the lake avoids the heavy crows that Meredith and Weirs Beach bring while offering a variety of excellent restaurants and inviting shops. Enjoy the small town charm and appreciate the beautiful oranges and reds on the trees surrounding the route. While in town don’t forget to head down to the lakefront and check out our new sister resort, the Center Harbor Inn.

Once through Center Harbor and into Moultonborough, hop on Rt. 109 and head towards Wolfeboro. The long stretch on 109 is surrounded by beautiful trees and will give you a front row seat to the famous fall foliage of New Hampshire. Keep your eyes peeled for some beautiful houses along the way. There are a few spots that give you clear views of the lake right in Tuftonboro, pull off to the side, step out, and enjoy the fresh crisp air coming off the lake and take a photo with your family before getting back in the car and heading towards Wolfeboro.

Once you hit downtown Wolfeboro find a place to pull over on Main St. to get out and stretch those legs. Wolfeboro is your quintessential lake town, downtown is located right on the southeast shores of Winnipesaukee. With coffee shops, boutiques, and restaurants, you can enjoy being on the lake without actually being on the lake. Try one of our favorite spots for lunch at Garwoods! They are open year-round and offer a waterfront patio overlooking Wolfeboro Bay. Whether you are craving seafood, or a hearty fall soup, they have it here.

From Wolfeboro take Rt. 28 until you hit Bay Hill Rd. and take a right onto Rt. 11 on Mt Major Hwy, where you will cross the Southernmost point of the Lake at Alton Bay. Continue onto 11 until you get to 118 and take that straight back to the Summit Resort. The entire drive should take about 1hr 45min, with stops along the way you can make a full day of experiencing Fall in the New Hampshire Lakes Region. This is a lakeside adventure you will remember for a long time.

Local Eats and Kitchen Treats

Eating local is so important now a days, and as the weather and seasons change we are at peak season for a wide variety of fresh produce in New Hampshire. The Summit Resort is located right in the heart of the Lakes Region, which makes it easy to get direct access to a variety of farms, markets, and stands. Our favorite of the bunch is Beans and Greens located in Gilford just down the road from the resort.

The Summit offers a unique feature that sets us apart from other hotels in the area, full kitchens stocked with everything you need. With access to a full kitchen guests can visit local farm stands and bring back fresh groceries to their room where they can cook up a meal for the whole family using locally sourced ingredients.

Not only does Beans and Greens grow and sell their own fruits and vegetables, they also sell local and organic meats, cheeses, pastries, pies, honey, jam, and a variety of other offerings. Aside from food and produce they have a large greenhouse where they sell a large selection of plants and flowers. They are a very family friendly place where there is a barn with animals and a corn maze in the fall.

While you’re there grab some fresh salad greens, strawberries, blueberries, goat cheese, a great piece of meat, and a blueberry pie. We have crafted the perfect meal for you to recreate at the Summit this summer based around our parent resort restaurant, The Hilltop. (Scroll down for the salad recipe)

Once you get back to the Resort, take advantage of the outdoor grills we offer and fire it up to start cooking your protein of choice. Whip up the Red, White, and Blue Salad in the full kitchen as a side to accompany your meal. Sit down at one the outdoor picnic tables, or gather around the dining room table in your room and savor the local flavors.

I hope you didn’t forget that blueberry pie we mentioned. Throw it in the oven at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes and you have the perfect summer meal. You don’t always need to go out to eat every night while on vacation, you can eat a fresh and healthy meal as a family at the Summit Resort while sampling some of the best produce available in New England and supporting local farms.

New Floor System at the Indoor Pool

pool_deck_renovations
This spring kicked off with a bang at the Summit Resort with demolition of a major section of decking surrounding the large, indoor pool. In an effort to run new utilities for ambient heat and resurface the lower tier with fresh Pebble Tec flooring, our staff made quick work of the tear down process. Outside contractors have been brought in to professionally finish the balance of the project.

Scheduled to be fully delivered by Thursday, April 13th, this major upgrade will ensure a new level of creature comfort for guests enjoying our star amenity. While the improvements might not visually stand out when finished, this is just one of the many details the resort tackles to ensure we deliver the best hospitality experience possible.

Upgraded Bathrooms in our Deluxe Suites

Freshly renovated master bathroom
This summer season opens with major enhancements to the master bathrooms in our 2 Bedroom Deluxe Suites. When these units were originally constructed, the master bathroom included a large Jacuzzi tub with no shower facilities. Guests were there to enjoy a long awaited vacation and offering a large format Jacuzzi off the main bedroom was a fair tradeoff. After all, there was still a shower available in the guest bathroom.

Times have changed and so haven’t the needs of our vacationers. In an effort to offer more flexibility and greater guest convenience, the resort embarked on a significant renovation project to completely retrofit the master bathroom facilities in the Deluxe Suites. The project involved completely gutting the bathrooms and removing the original large Jacuzzis. New whirlpool tubs along with full shower fixtures were installed in their place. Along with the new bathroom amenities, fresh vanity cabinets with granite countertops were added to upgrade the furnishings. New laminate, plank flooring and a fresh coat of contemporary paint colors finished off the conversion.

With the renovation project fully complete, guests staying in our Deluxe Suites will enjoy these upgraded and inviting master bathrooms without needing to share a shower with their family or friends. This renovation is just one small example of the Summit Resort continuously improving to meet the needs of modern vacationers.

The Secret Grotto

secret_grotto
With an expansive indoor amenities center, The Summit Resort stands apart from other hospitality options in New Hampshire’s Lakes Region. Known for the large, indoor pool, new guests anticipate a fun time basking in the warm water or sliding down the slide. Returning visitors, who are familiar with the pool area, are oftentimes more excited about a secret, hidden feature.

Tucked away in the rocks, beyond the waterfall, lies a hidden oasis. Passing through the falls from the main pool, guests find themselves enclosed in a secret grotto. With high rocky walls and another mood setting waterfall perched over a submerged bench, the grotto offers a special spot to unwind after a long day, think deep thoughts or just enjoy a conversation with your fellow guests. This relaxing feature adds a distinct character to the indoor pool facility, setting it apart from your standard hotel pool area.

One of many reasons The Summit defines itself as a step above your average accommodations near Lake Winnipesaukee, the grotto is something for returning guests to reacquaint themselves with and new guests to discover.
